Our Mentoring Programs
How many of us remember those special people from our childhood who we looked up to, who shared stories with us, who listened to us talk about our daily challenges? Nearly all of us can recall those unique adults who entered our lives at one time or another, especially when it seemed we needed them most. Covington Partners in Prevention offers several programs in which we as adults are afforded the opportunity to give back in a way that those adults gave to us.
Mentoring creates a reciprocal relationship that has long-term benefits for both parties. We tend to focus on what mentoring gives to the child. Students with mentors are less likely to abuse drugs, and they do better in school and in life. But mentoring often benefits the mentor just as significantly. Speaking of her mentor, seventh grade student Jessica said, "She changed my life forever." Likewise, one of our volunteers commented, "To whom much is given much is expected. And in giving of myself in this program, I've gotten back tenfold anything I've given."
Some of our partners have included Most Valuable Kids, RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer Program), Great American Financial Resources, C-Forward, and there have been many others. Regardless of whether you're a corporate executive, a retired senior, or a young adult just starting out, you have what it takes to make a positive impact on a child. If you enjoy working with children and are willing to commit a minimal amount of time, you have all the skills necessary to be a mentor.
Our mentoring groups work in elementary schools, the middle school and the high school to support young people through relationships with caring adults. We established more than two hundred new one-on-one matches last year, and nearly twice our goal of ongoing relationships were sustained. While we're proud of these numbers, every school in the Covington area has a list of students who are still waiting for this kind of support.
