Calling All Parents

Consider this: On average, parents and teachers spend only 15 minutes a year talking to each other.

And yet: Evidence shows that students with families involved at school have better attendance, improved behavior, and higher grades.

When parents are involved at school, their children go farther in school, and the schools they go to are better.

There are endless ways you can get involved in your child's school, and equally endless benefits to your child.

Calling All Parents is an organization within the Covington Independent Public Schools with one primary objective: to bridge the gap between parents and schools. Modeled on the National Network of Partnership Schools, Calling All Parents is dedicated to developing "research-based approaches to organize and sustain excellent programs of family and community involvement that will increase student success in school."

To help you get started immediately, please download our recently completed Family Involvement in Education Guidebook. We developed this guide to inform families of the many opportunities for them to be involved in Covington Schools. It's an invaluable tool that can help you learn about the many ways you can participate in your child's education. (We would also greatly appreciate your feedback on this guidebook; if you are interested, you can download the guideline feedback form and mail it to the address indicated.)

You can also contact Calling All Parents at 859-392-3179 at any time to discuss your participation!

Parent Partnership Advisory Council (PPAC)

At the core of Calling All Parents is the Parent Partnership Advisory Council (PPAC). PPAC includes parents from every school in the district and meets every other month. The goal of the council is to call all parents to partner with schools and the community in an effort to create more advocates for improved student learning. To achieve that goal, we must:

  • Recruit more parents and bring purpose to their involvement
  • Bridge the gap between parents and schools in ways that show how powerful that partnership can be for children
  • Gain knowledge by educating staff and parents on ways to succeed in school and being aware of involvement opportunities
  • Spread the word!

Our PPAC Committee

The council meets every other month on the last Wednesday of the month from 11:00am to 1:00pm. This group is an integral part of Calling All Parents and welcomes any parent or influential adult in a child's life. We need your participation!

Parents and Teachers Talking Together (PT3)

At a time when learning expectations are being raised, it is more important than ever that the two groups most responsible for student learning -- parents and teachers -- better understand each other. The following two questions serve as the guideposts for our work together:

  • What do parents and teachers most want for our students?
  • What do we need to do to get what we want for our students?

Workshops to answer these questions are held each school year. Parents and teachers from all Covington Independent Public Schools are invited to participate. In 2007, 86 parents and teachers came together to identify the following district needs:

  • Increase parent involvement opportunities
  • Improve home-school communication
  • Enforce school-wide consistency

Wish List

If you are an individual or organization who has some of the following resources available, we would be happy to hear from you!

  • Print services... we have considerable printing costs and would benefit greatly from assistance
  • Refreshments, snacks, lunches for district-wide parent meetings and trainings
  • Folders, notebooks, pens for PPAC members and parents
  • Incentives to recognize dedicated parents and volunteers, such as gift cards, family entertainment coupons, etc.
